news about swallowing

While going through the udn online news, I saw this report about a guy who was choked to death by a piece of chewing gum.
This 40+ year old male had difficulty controling food in the mouth, was sluggish in swallowing, had breathing problems, and was recommended by his physician to approach rehabilitation with chewing gum?!
To a guy who could not control, swallow, or breathe effectively, recommending sticky and bulky chewing gum is just brilliant -___-

For people that have non-progressive neurological swallowing difficulty with bolus control and want some exercise, here's an option:
Tie a candy, a disolvable one if concerned about safty, with dental floss, hold the other end and move the candy around in the mouth.
